Queen Elizabeth II Longest Reigning Monarch #QueenElizabeth #HerMajesty
H.M. THE QUEEN IS OUR LONGEST EVER REIGNING MONARCH. On WEDNESDAY 9 SEPTEMBER.
By Richard Fitzwilliams, royal commentator, is available for comment on 07939 602 749(www.richardfitzwilliams. com).

The Queen surpasses Queen Victoria’s record (63 years, 7 months, 2 days) on September 9th and will be opening the new Borders Railway in Scotland and is expected to briefly refer to this unique record. The major celebrations will occur when the Queen celebrates her 90th Birthday next June.
Since her broadcast from Cape Town at the age of 21 when she promised to serve her people all her life, the Queen, a deeply religious person, has carried out this pledge brilliantly.
The purposes of a monarchy are as a symbol of national unity (she has been but there is a question mark over Scotland as part of the union), continuity (few have known anyone else, in a changing world she reassures), the projection of soft power (the Queen’s state visit to Ireland in 2011, in my view the highlight of her reign, is a brilliant example of this), the headship of the Commonwealth (she has kept it together) and she heads the world’s most high profile monarchy. British business, tourism, and charities all benefit enormously from the activities of the royal family. She is the font of honour (the system has much improved in recent years despite outrageous exceptions). She is the Supreme Governor of the Church of England and Defender of the Faith, (it is unclear in our multifaith society how long monarchs will keep this title in the future).
The low point of her reign was in the 1990s, a decade which included her “annus horribilis” in 1992 and which included the tragedy of Diana’s death and royal scandals.
The Duke of Edinburgh, her “strength and stay”, has served her and the institution of monarchy superbly, if sometimes controversially.
She is the oldest ever monarch, the most travelled, the most depicted, from Annigoni’s portrait which was wonderful to Lucien Freud’s which was a failure.
The monarch’s powers are to advise, encourage and warn. Her duties in our unwritten Constitution include a weekly audience with her Prime Minister and reading the Speech from the Throne at the Opening of Parliament. Her Christmas Message is her own and eagerly awaited with social media spreading the word very well. The institution of monarchy denies powers to others and is above party politics. However, the Queen seems almost certain to have an avowed republican, Jeremy Corbyn, as the next Labour leader.
The monarchy is popular in Britain and in her 15 other Commonwealth realms. Its future with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge so happy together and Prince George and Princess Charlotte also the objects of world fascination, seems assured.
One of the important aspects of the Queen’s rule is that we don’t know what she thinks. The Prince of Wales when he ascends the throne will have to rule in a similar way. She may not have given her name to an age but she has been an outstanding example of service to this one.

Unusual #Swedish #RoyalWedding #Monarchyonline #London
UNUSUAL SWEDISH ROYAL WEDDING 4.30pm SATURDAY 13 JUNE. Richard Fitzwilliams, royal commentator, is available on 07939 602 749 (www.richardfitzwilliams.com)
When Prince Carl Philip of Sweden marries former topless model Sofia Hellqvist in the Royal Chapel, Stockholm, the lack of controversy over the match in Sweden is a sign how far monarchies have become more relaxed in contemporary Europe. Prince Carl Philip is third in line to the throne, having been superseded by his sister Crown Princess Victoria who married her personal trainer Daniel Westling in 2010 and has a daughter Estelle, owing to a retrospective law in 1980 giving the first born right of succession regardless of sex, Europe’s first such law. They have been living together since 2010 and the public have got used to what would formerly have been a highly controversial match.
The marriage will be followed by the traditional carriage ride and then a dinner and dance. There will be a 21-gun salute. The Swedish monarchy is purely ceremonial after changes to the constitution in 1974 and seems popular.
It was Norway’s King Harald who married Sonja Haraldsen in 1968 and subsequently Sweden with King Carl Gustav who married Olympic hostess Silvia Sommerlath in 1976, who pioneered the marrying of members of the royal families into the middle class and for love, the norm having been previously that royalty married royalty in both countries. Marrying outside royalty and aristocracy is now usual in Europe with the British royal wedding being the most recent high profile example.
When Norway’s Crown Prince Haakon married Mette-Marit Holby in 2001 it was initially highly controversial that she was a single mother and linked with the use of drugs but she has become extremely popular. There was controversy when Crown Prince (now King) Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands married Maxima Zorreguieta as her father had been a member of the Argentine military junta of General Videla and when his mother Crown Princess (later Queen) Beatrix married Claus von Amsberg who was German in 1965. It would once have been thought improbable that Spain would have a divorced Queen but Queen Letizia is divorced. She and her husband King Felipe are attempting to rebuild the popularity of the monarchy in Spain after King Juan Carlos’s abdication last June.
Monaco is unique as the Oscar-winning actress Grace Kelly’s marriage to Prince Rainier in 1956 was so high profile but their daughters Princesses Caroline and Stephanie’s disastrous love lives made the gossip columns for years. The heir Prince Albert had two illegitimate children which he has publicly acknowledged though his marriage to Princess Charlene now seems a stable one. The “sunny place for shady people” has its international profile largely because of its royal family.
There are still over 40 monarchies in the world. More recently, laws have equalized the sexes, most recently in Britain and the 15 Commonwealth realms and in all European countries save for Spain, Monaco and Liechtenstein. The institution can go through troubled times as Britain’s monarchy did in the 1990s and Spain’s is now but its ability to adapt and change rigid rules and protocol, as shown by the forthcoming Swedish royal wedding, is undoubtedly a pivotal reason for its survival and continued popularity.

Royal Baby DUE SOON #monarchyonline
Feature by Richard Fitzwilliams
ROYAL BABY DUE SHORTLY! Richard Fitzwilliams, royal commentator, covered the birth of Prince George and is available for comment on 07939 602 749 (www.richardfitzwilliams.com)
The new baby will be 4th in line to the throne and the Queen’s fifth great-grandchild. It will be the subject of enormous press attention worldwide as the British monarchy is the world’s most high profile royal family and William and Kate are the world’s most glamorous royal couple. The birth at the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Paddington will be followed by areplica of the famous pose in 1982 on the steps when William was held by Diana, two years later it was Harry and 21 months ago it was George by Kate. Many of us marvelled at William’s agility in getting George in hiscar seat outside St Mary’s and driving away with the world’s press looking on though it was rehearsed! The new baby will reportedly be staying for a couple of days at Kensington Palace, the Cambridge’s official home, where the Queen is likely to visit and at the Christening there will be another historic gathering with the monarch and three future generations of royalty, which last took place at George’s Christening in the Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace in October 2013 but had not happened previously since 1894.He or she will be taken to Anmer Hall on the Queen’s Sandringham Estate in Norfolk which will be their base where William intends to give his family as much privacy as possible. He is training to be an East Anglian Air Ambulance pilot (with a six weeks break including paternity leave till June) after being an RAF Search and Rescue pilot based in Angelsey until September 2013 where they also had privacy. He will alsoperform royal duties.William and Kate’s enormous appeal as shown in their trips to Canada and the US and his to China and Japan showed the remarkable access British royals have for the causes they espouse such as William’s campaign against the illegal trade in wildlife. Kate has again suffered severe morning sickness which caused her to cancel her solo trip to Malta in September. Help from her mother Carole is likely to be important in the weeks ahead as the couple cope with sleep deprivation with two children under two and George acclimatises to having a sibling. George’s public appearances have been extremely rare.
