Royal Childhood, Buckingham Palace Summer Opening 2014

Latest Summer news from Richard Fitzwilliams....
ROYAL CHILDHOOD. THE SUMMER EXHIBITION AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE. OPENED TO PUBLIC SATURDAY 26TH JULY. Richard Fitzwilliams, royal commentator, has seen a preview and is available on 07939 602 749 (www.richardfitzwilliams.com)
This exhibition is another of the wonderful shows put on by the Royal Collection and the perfect way to celebrate the recent anniversary of Prince George turning a year old when we saw those marvellous photographs with his happy and devoted parents.
The joy of this exhibition is the display of film with such enchanting footage of relaxed and happy royals and some simply wonderful archive of H.M. The Queen when Princess Elizabeth including dancing and a good deal of having fun. There are also a lovely series of photographs of members of the royal family in past years, my favourite being Princess Elizabeth (Lilibet) and Princess Margaret on a rocking horse in 1932.
The exhibition has exhibits in throughout the Palace. There are outfits, toys, gifts and artefacts in The Ball Supper Room with film of a miniature cottage the people of Wales built for Princess Elizabeth when she was 6, film footage and further artefacts in the Ballroom and the Lily Font which was used for Prince George’s Christening, in the Music Room.
I had never previously heard Princess Elizabeth’s first radio broadcast during Children’s Hour from Windsor Castle in 1940 and it was very moving to do so. There is a simply adorable photograph in The Picture Gallery of Prince Charles and Princess Anne reading on the floor photographed by Lord Snowden. From 18th Century rattles to rocking horses and the gift of alpaca wool President and Mrs Obama gave Prince George this show, spanning 250 years, is a cornucopia of delights which is bound to pull in the crowds.
Proceeds from the Summer Opening of Buckingham Palace, which dates back 21 years, contributes directly towards the upkeep of the Royal Collection which is held in trust for the nation. It is one of the world’s top collections and stages
